The Groundskeeper

I hear the groundskeeper's tune,
he carols his song to the rhythm of the broom,
he tends to his list of to-do's,
the garden needs a weeding and the trees a groom,
a worker of that backyard land,
his trusty machete and shovel in hand,
a methodical splitter of wood
and the fiercest sawzaller that ever stood.
I hear the groundskeeper's tune,
he sings to the rustle of the skunk and raccoon,
he's the backyard's water supply,
he can fill a 5 gallon bucket in the blink of an eye,
A summoner of things that grow
the nightshades, the citrus, the avocado,
the lettuce and the mustard greens,
yeah he's got the meanest garden that you've ever seen.
The day belongs to the day,
the bird belongs to his birdsong sound,
the dirt belongs to the plough,
and the groundskeeper belongs to the ground.
